Outreach On any given day, the first urge of our members is to either get out and collect or to study what they have already collected. This we do as our avocation. We ourselves probably underestimate the importance our own outreach activities. The recent publication of the "Muddy Creek" book by the Virginia DMR indicates that what we do can make a significant contribution to the existing body of scientific knowledge. It is much more difficult, however, to quantify or to qualify the work we do with the public or in schools. Whether these activities help a young person to discover a love that may become a life's work, or simply help raise awareness of the wonder that the "real" world holds (as we steadily continue to "tame" it), our sharing of our work can be just as important as our doing it. This is a new area of the MGS website, and is like the www itself, "under construction." Members are invited to submit images and text related to these activities, and all are invited back to examine this area and the activities it represents.
