the rostrum

MGS members who submit articles for the Rostrum may be elligible for winning certain "journalistic" type awards if their articles are submitted to one of the various federations that the MGS is a member of. Below is a list of the awards along with the members names and types of articles:

                Bulletin Editors Advisory Committee Awards

The Easter Federation of Mineral and Lapidary Societies, Inc. have recognized the following members of MGS for their written contributions to The Rostrum:


2004 Awards

Poetry - Rick Smith received a Trophy Award for “The Projectile Point” in Volume 12, No. 2. This poem also received a 1st Place Award by the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies in Adult Poetry. Rick also received a 6th Place Award for “Miocene Treasures” in Volume 12, No. 3.

Original Non-Technical Articles - Honorable Mention Awards were presented to Don Miller for “What’s in a Name?” in Volume 12, No. 2.

Written Features - Honorable Mention Awards were presented to Phil Schmitz for “January Program” in Volume 12, No. 2 and to Glenn D. Roche for “More than Science” in Volume 12, No. 2.

Large Bulletins - Robert C. Asreen, Jr. received a 2rd Place Award. The Rostrum also received an Honorable Mention Award by the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies as a Large Bulletin.


2003 Awards

Poetry - Rick Smith received a Trophy Award for “Fossil Shark Tooth Addiction” in Volume 12, No. 1. This poem also received a 1st Place Award by the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies in Adult Poetry. Terry Cirrincione received a 3trd Place Award for “Ceratopsian” in Volume 11, No. 4 and Rick Smith also received a 4th Place Award for “A Bridge Across Time” in Volume 11, No. 4.

Written Features - Paul R. Murdoch, Jr. received a Trophy Award for “Articulated Porpoise Skeleton Excavated at Calvert Cliffs, Part 1,” in Volume 11, No. 2. This article also received a 1st Place Award by the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies as an Original Adult Article.

Original Educational Articles - Terry Cirrincione received an 8th Place Award for “Focus on Fossils: Dinosaur Fossil Fallacies” in Volume 11, No. 4 and an Honorable Mention Award for “A Brief Revelation of Early Dinosaur Thoughts and Discoverers” in Volume 11, No. 4.

Original Non-Technical Articles - Honorable Mention Awards were presented to Mel Hurd for “Megalodon – Hunting the Hunter” in Volume 11, No. 4 and also to Timothy P. Price for “The Foundation of Geology – The Map that Changed the World” in Volume 11, No. 4 and “To Make an Omlet…” in Volume 11, No. 2.

Feature Articles - Honorable Mention Awards were presented to Phil Schmitz for “September Program” in Volume 12, No. 1 and to Eric J. Woody for “Muddy Creek Coprolites” in Volume 11, No. 2.

Large Bulletins - Robert C. Asreen, Jr. received a 3rd Place Award. The Rostrum also received an Honorable Mention Award by the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies as a Large Bulletin.


2002 Awards

Poetry - J. Richard (Rick) Smith received a 1st Place Award for “The Fossil Dig” in Volume 11, No. 1.

Original Educational Articles - 2nd Place Awards were presented to Terry Cirrincione for “Focus on Fossils: Dinosaurs” in Volume 11, No. 1 and to David M. Anderson for “A New Lee Creek Collection Site” in Volume 10, No. 2.

Original Non-Technical Articles - 2nd Place Awards were presented to Terry Cirrincione for “Focus on Fossils: Sauroposeidon Proteles” in Volume 11, No. 1 and also to Dick Grier, Jr. for “The Amelia Mining District, VA” in Volume 10, No. 3. Timothy Price received a 3rd Place Award for his “Book Review: Great Ideas Hatch Out” in Volume 10, No. 2.

Feature Articles - Eric J. Woody received a 2nd Place Award for “My Story of Lee Creek Mine” in Volume 10, No. 2

New Editor Bulletins - Robert C. Asreen, Jr. received a 3rd Place Award.
